What’s the difference between PIP and Medical Coverage?

The next time you are shopping for auto insurance you should be asked if you want PIP (personal injury protection) or medical coverage. There is often some confusion around these as some think they accomplish the same goal, but that isn’t exactly accurate.

PIP does cover medical payments sure, but it also covers other key things such as a percentage of loss of income due to the inability to work, and essential services such as childcare. PIP can also cover drivers listed on the policy, passengers injured, and household members. It covers you for up to three years, so if the accident results in you needing to go to a chiropractor once a month for two years you will be covered.

Medical coverage on the other hand only covers medical bills. Also, this coverage only protects for 1-3 years depending on your provider, and does not cover loss of income or essential services.

Depending on your situation having one of these coverages can be extremely beneficial and help when you need it most.
